Description
European Modernism and the Information Society: Informing the Present, Understanding the Past (1) was published as the result of a conference held in 2005. It has thoughtful and detailed chapters on early 20th-century efforts to create, disseminate and manage information in the public domain. These have been written by historians, philosophers, librarians, sociologists and scholars of language, literature and urban planning. Its chapters are of two broad kinds: firstly, those that introduce the era of modernism or deal with broad conceptual developments; secondly, those on particular developments and their initiators. The latter cover certain key figures who were later to be acknowledged for their efforts to apply scientific principles to information control and information retrieval, such as Paul Otlet, Otto Neurath, Patrick Geddes, H G Wells, the English Fabians, Suzanne Briet, Wilhelm Ostwald, Franz Maria Feldhaus and L S Jast. When viewed through the lens of history and the eyes of scholars who are enthusiastic about this period, these early efforts come to life for the reader. The authors tell us, vividly, about the enthusiasm and optimism for ambitious information ideas and projects related to new systems for managing information which emerged in this period. They also view them from a contemporary context, so that the reader is able to think about their relevance today.
